The Museum and Meeting Room Expansion Project

The Society has been working on a project to help preserve and display its artifacts, library books and history.  An addition is being built onto the old 1930's grain barn next to the schoolhouse that currently houses its library and museum.  The ground level will serve as a welcome center, lecture room and a place to show films, and will also hold a kitchen and a bathroom.  The second floor will expand the museum and library, displaying things from old books and period clothing to video interviews of former teachers and students of the one-room school.  This area will be available for class trips and also open to the public for tours or to conduct research, by appointment.

The barn had been used for years to store artifacts and archives.  The expansion has been planned since 2000, with construction beginning in 2001.  The idea had been around since the 1960's.  The project is funded mainly through grants and donations.  Many volunteers have been working on the project, including students from the Upper Bucks Area Vocational/Technical School in Bedminister and carpenters from Local 1467 in Bucks County.  The addition is about three-quarters finished.

The library has a nearly complete collection of microfilm from the old Quakertown Free Press newspapers spanning a century.  There is also a compilation of marriage and death notices for most of the same time period.

Annual Homecoming

This year our homecoming will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2009.   There will be guest speakers from the Quakertown School District, state representatives and of course former students and teachers.  Special music has been provided in the past by the Incredibles and local student talent.  The museum will be open from 1-2 PM with tours available on request.  The program begins at 2 PM.

Summer Yard Sale

Our second annual yard sale will be held this year on June 27, 2009.  Donations will be accepted at the museum on Saturdays in May.   There will be a hot lunch served and some snack items.
